Onnit Reviews: Evaluating Onnit’s supplements and wellness products

Can Onnit help you achieve “Total Human Optimization”? We find out if it lives up to the hype.

Last Updated: Mar 4, 2021

Onnit reviews

If you use social media like most of us, there’s little doubt you’ve seen many vitamin and nutrient supplements hyped through online marketing. Maybe you’ve even been tempted to try them out. But how do you know what supplements are useful and which ones will work for you?

Because the FDA does not regulate nutritional supplements like food and drugs, sometimes it takes a little research to find information on their efficacy and side effects. At Innerbody, we’ve investigated manufacturers of supplements for hair health, mental clarity, physical performance, and multivitamins. Among them, Onnit is one of the companies that truly stands out because its products are backed by unbiased scientific studies that demonstrate their effectiveness.

Whether you’re looking for mental, physical, or spiritual wellbeing, Onnit hopes to help with its supplements and products. Is Onnit right for you? Read our reviews below to learn the pros, cons, and details of this ever-expanding total-wellness company.

Why you should trust us

Innerbody Research recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary online. Over the past two decades, we have helped tens of millions of readers make more informed decisions involving staying healthy and living healthier lifestyles.

We extensively test each health service we review. We try our best to give you, our readers, an unbiased exploration of at-home health services, free of marketing jargon or gimmicks. We evaluate the service based on our adherence to quality, the latest medical evidence and health standards, and a simple question: would we buy the product or service ourselves if it weren’t part of our job, and would we recommend it to family and friends?

Additionally, this review of Onnit, like all health-related content on this website, was thoroughly vetted by one or more members of our Medical Review Board for accuracy.

What is Onnit?

Onnit is a health and wellness company based in Austin, Texas, where – in addition to manufacturing vitamin supplements and fitness products – it also operates a gym, food truck, and yoga studios.

Founder Aubrey Marcus created Onnit in 2010 alongside his company mission for “Total Human Optimization.” Today, it stands as an Inc. 500 company with over 250 products, including nutritional supplements, nootropics, CBD oils, fitness gear, apparel, and foods.

Onnit has gained the following of many celebrities and athletes, making it one of the most well-known total body-mind wellness companies on the market. We aren’t interested in any of that, nor do we find it compelling. What we do find compelling is that its products are scientifically backed by peer-reviewed studies demonstrating their efficacy and lack of serious side effects.

Onnit products

Onnit offers a variety of supplements for total mind-body wellness. We tried four of Onnit’s top-selling supplements for our testing purposes, which we’ll detail below. Onnit categorizes its supplements by their primary target:

  • Focus + Brain
  • Mood + Sleep
  • Digestive Health
  • Support & Vitality
  • Essential Nutrients
  • Performance
  • Immune System
  • Goal-Based Collections

For our evaluation of Onnit’s products, we opted to test four of its top-selling supplements. These supplements are so popular that you’ve probably seen them promoted by celebrities, athletes, and health and fitness professionals. Keep reading to find out our results.

In terms of food products, Onnit offers MCT oils derived from coconut as well as an excellent array of healthy snacks, protein powders, coffees, and teas. Its nutrition products include:

  • Fats & Oils
  • Snacking
  • Powerfoods
  • Bundles
  • Protein
  • Coffee & Tea

Onnit’s approach to fitness is regarded as “unconventional training” and employs non-typical equipment and methods. These include the use of kettlebells, steel maces, steel clubs, sandbags, and battle ropes. The Onnit Gym in Austin, Texas, provides training in these methods and equipment, and the company sells training videos as well for at-home use. Onnit’s products for fitness include:

  • Kettlebells
  • On-Demand Workouts
  • Clubs & Maces
  • Home Fitness Programs
  • At-Home Fitness Essentials

Onnit sells sportswear and accessories for men and women. These items include everything from hats, t-shirts, pants, and gym bags to Jiu-Jitsu gear and special collections. Our focus, however, was Onnit’s wellness products.

Onnit’s Alpha BRAIN

PRICE: $34.95 for a 30-count as a one-off purchase or $29.71 with Subscribe & Save (15% off)

Alpha BRAIN is Onnit’s flagship product and an extremely popular over-the-counter nootropic supplement that improves brain function and supports memory, focus, and achieving the “flow state.” Of the multitudes of “smart drugs” or nootropics on the market, only Alpha BRAIN is supported by randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. These studies have demonstrated a 12% improvement in delayed verbal recall and executive functioning tasks and 21% faster completion time in executive function assessments over control groups.

We were excited to try out Alpha BRAIN after closely examining the research and multiple reviews, and we were just as excited by the results we achieved using it. The product elicits immediate effects in mental clarity without caffeine or any consequential “jitters.” It contains vitamin B6, as well as L-tyrosine, oat straw extract, phosphatidylserine, cat’s claw extract, L-alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine, Bacopa extract, Huperzia serrata extract, L-leucine, and pterostilbene.

Among our team who tested Alpha BRAIN, some reported having more vivid dreams (and in a couple of cases, lucid dreams) during use. None of the testers found this problematic, however, and in fact, lucid dreaming is a reported side effect that many consider a “side benefit.” Alpha BRAIN gave our researchers a greater sense of creativity, mental energy, and focus on daily tasks during use, which appears consistent with the results of clinical studies. Ultimately, a strong thumbs up.

Onnit New MOOD

30 count: $29.95 as a one-off purchase or $25.46 with Subscribe & Save (15% off)

New MOOD is one of Onnit’s latest products and, as noted by the company, it works as a perfect complement to Alpha BRAIN. In fact, you’ll find both Alpha BRAIN and New MOOD supplements in the Total Human supplement packs (see more details below). New MOOD works to help you relax at the end of the day and achieve peaceful sleep.

New MOOD contains niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, and 450mg of the Onnit Tranquility Blend, which contains extracts of valerian, chamomile, lemon balm, and jujube seed. Additional components in New MOOD are L-tryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptophan, and inositol. These last three ingredients are precursors to serotonin, which converts to melatonin and increases peacefulness and restfulness. New MOOD supplements are gluten-, soy-, and caffeine-free.

As with Alpha BRAIN, New MOOD’s ingredients have double-blind, peer-reviewed studies to back them up.

Among our testing team, one used Alpha BRAIN in conjunction with New MOOD, one individual used New MOOD with Total Gut Health, and one used only New MOOD. All three testers felt a significant impact from using New MOOD and recommended it for promoting a sense of peacefulness and calm. While it was not always effective at inducing sleep (especially after jam-packed days), it lifted stress and eased the “rattling brain” syndrome that can keep us from falling into slumber. In particular, the individual who used New MOOD in conjunction with Alpha BRAIN felt that the “buzz” of the latter was quelled by the former. Lucid dreams still occurred, but the user could enjoy a restful night’s sleep and awaken clear-headed and focused the next day.

Total Gut Health by Onnit

30 count: $75.90 as a one-off purchase or $64.52 with Subscribe & Save (15% off)

You may have heard the phrase “the gut-brain connection” in recent years, as the scientific world has focused on links between mental and emotional health and the gastrointestinal system. This focus has spurred myriad companies selling probiotics aimed at restoring a healthy microbiome within the digestive system and, as a result, positively impacting mental health.

Onnit’s holistic approach to wellbeing includes Total Gut Health, which contains fennel, ginger, and the AstraZyme blend, among other ingredients, all of which serve to help your body properly digest food and nutrients. After all, what’s the point of eating well or taking supplements if your digestive system can’t process them?

Our testers found that Total Gut Health eased gastrointestinal distress, including gas and bloating after eating certain trigger foods (onions, garlic, legumes, etc.). As for the gut-brain connection, does Total Gut Health make you happier? It’s hard to say, but having fewer digestive issues certainly does make life a little easier and more pleasant all around.

Total Human

30 count: $137.95 as a one-off purchase or $117.26 with Subscribe & Save (15% off)

Total Human is a multivitamin supplement package that combines some of the company’s top-selling and top-rated products into one. It includes Alpha BRAIN along with Shroom Tech Support, New MOOD, ViruTech, Stron Bone, Key Minerals Shroom Tech Immune, krill oil, spirulina, and chlorella. These supplements are divided into a Day Pack and a Night Pack, appropriately including ingredients for best performance in the mornings and peaceful rest at night.

We won’t lie: if you hate swallowing pills, this multivitamin supplement may not be for you. There are eight capsules in both the Day Pack and Night Pack, so you’re going to be taking 16 capsules daily. On the other hand, Total Human is the most economical way to experience the benefits of Onnit’s top products.

Among our testers who tried Total Human, there were few complaints other than the number of pills to take each day. In terms of results, researchers felt energized and alert from the morning Alpha BRAIN supplements but did not have sleeping issues thanks to the New MOOD evening pills. Comparatively, Total Human costs a fair amount more than your average daily vitamin, but it also packs a much more potent punch. Our testers were impressed.

How we evaluate health products and services

At Innerbody Research, we customize our evaluation criteria depending on the type and nature of the health-related service or product. For Onnit and other health products, we have five areas that we use for our evaluations, including:

Quality: How well does the company deliver its core service(s) to the customer? For testing services, does the company adhere to the latest and most advanced testing technologies and achieve a very high degree of accuracy? For non-testing telehealth services, is the quality of the service high enough that we would recommend it to loved ones without hesitation? If not, why not?

User-friendly: How intuitive and user-friendly is the service? Does the device, program, app, or website achieve a good degree of user-friendliness for its customers?

Value: Are you getting your money’s worth? Are there any hidden costs or charges? Does the company offer discounts?

Privacy: If health data is stored, will your data be stored securely? Are payments secure?

Customer support: Particularly in situations where ‘one size fits all’ doesn’t make sense, how well does the company help to make the service ideal for you?
