What is Medi Weightloss?

Medi-Weightloss is a physician-supervised weight-loss program that combines a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate diet with personalized care and guidance. Some of the benefits of Medi-Weightloss include:

  • Weekly diagnostic checkups
  • Ongoing support during your weight-loss journey
  • Individualized diet and meal plans
  • Personalized fitness goals and workout regimens
  • Additional supplements and nutrient injections

When you enroll in Medi-Weightloss, you’re assigned a medical professional to guide you through your weight-loss journey and provide weekly diagnostic reports regarding your progress, blood levels, and overall health.

Each individualized meal plan with the Medi-Weightloss program differs, but most focus on a high-protein, low-carb diet with restricted calories and increased exercise. The program sometimes incorporates additional nutrient supplements, injections, and prescription medications that you won’t find in systems without professional medical oversight.

Does Medi Weightloss work?

Medi-Weightloss is an intensive and effective weight-loss program for individuals dedicated to making significant lifestyle and dietary changes for better long-term health. Their weekly checkups provide ongoing support during your weight-loss journey and ensure that you maintain nourishment and hydration on the low-calorie diet.

Our testers lost 3-5 pounds each week during the first month and reached our weight-loss goals within two months. The three-phase program includes ongoing guidance as you integrate more calories and carbohydrates into your daily diet. This helps you maintain your weight and prevents re-gain.

However, Medi-Weightloss is not for everyone. This diet starts with a very restricted calorie intake that can be too difficult for some customers to maintain. It is also relatively more expensive than independent weight-loss programs. But if you’re truly dedicated and want the most guidance for success, we recommend Medi-Weightloss.

How Medi Weightloss works

As it is a physician-supervised weight-loss program, joining Medi-Weightloss means that you visit a clinic weekly for check-ins, testing, and diagnostic updates. Medi-Weightloss has 94 locations nationwide in 27 states. They are primarily focused on the eastern coast from Maine to Florida, with several clinics expanding westward.

During your first visit to the Medi-Weightloss clinic near you, your physician performs a comprehensive medical evaluation that includes:

  • Blood testing
  • Body composition analysis
  • Lab work
  • EKG
  • Metabolic testing
  • A physical
  • An interview to discuss your medical history, dietary habits, and health goals

Once your doctor has analyzed your medical evaluation, they outline an individualized, three-phase plan for your weight-loss journey. This plan includes:

  • Weekly meal plans
  • Recipe resources
  • Workout regimens
  • Education and advice on cravings reduction
  • Additional supplements, injections, or medications, as needed
  • Signature food products and meal replacements, at an additional cost

Throughout the program, you also cut out various types of foods and beverages from your diet:

  • Sodas and other sugary beverages
  • Processed sugars and other sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, etc.)
  • Processed foods (fast food and fried foods)
  • Refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta, etc.)
  • Sweets (cookies, cakes, etc.)

The three phases

There are three phases to the Medi-Weightloss program, including:

  • Acute Weight Loss
  • Short-Term Maintenance
  • Wellness

During each phase, your diet and meal plans change. Below, we’ll look closer at the three stages and what to expect during each step.

Phase one: Acute Weight Loss

During the Acute Weight Loss phase, you eat high-protein foods that induce ketosis, a fat-burning process due to reduced carbohydrate intake. Ketosis is the basis for the Keto diet, Atkins diet, and other low-carb weight-loss programs.

This first phase is also calorie-restrictive, with calorie intake varying based on each individual. The caloric intake for our testers during Acute Weight Loss was under 1,000 calories per day from high-protein foods. Some of the foods you’ll likely find on your weekly meal plan during this phase include:

  • Eggs
  • Lean meats
  • Chicken breasts
  • Non-starchy fruits and vegetables
  • Fish
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Cooking oils

During the Acute Weight Loss phase, you check in with your medical provider at the Medi-Weightloss clinic each week for consistent testing and consultation. If your physician discovers any health issues, they can work with you to adapt the diet and fitness regimen accordingly.

Phase two: Short-Term Maintenance

The amount of weight you want to lose determines when you move into phase two of the Medi-Weightloss program. Our testers had minimal weight-loss goals (under 25 lbs each), so we moved to phase two after a month.

The Short-Term Maintenance phase begins when you are close to your goal weight. At this point, you gradually start to incorporate calories and carbohydrates into your diet. You continue checking in weekly with your physician or dietician for updates and continued support.

During this phase, begin incorporating some of the following into your daily diet:

  • Beans and legumes
  • Dairy products
  • Whole grains
  • Starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, etc.)

Phase three: Wellness

Your weekly clinic visits taper down to monthly check-ins in the final phase of the Medi-Weightloss journey. This phase involves maintenance and generally centers on a 40/30/30 plan, meaning that:

  • 40% of your diet contains carbohydrates
  • 30% of your diet includes protein
  • 30% of your diet contains healthy fats

At this point in the diet plan, you’ll be able to incorporate more foods as well, including:

  • All vegetables and fruits
  • Dairy products
  • Whole grains

Additional supplements, products, and injections

During the weight-loss journey, your physician or dietician may prescribe certain supplements, products, nutrient injections, or medications to assist you in meeting your goals. These products have additional costs but can benefit those lacking nutrients or struggling with weight loss.

For example, some of Medi-Weightloss’s Signature injections include:

  • B-Complex (provides B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6)
  • Vitamins B1 and B6
  • Vitamin C
  • L-Carnitine

Medi-Weightloss does not offer full pre-packaged meals like Weight Watchers or other brands, but it does provide some options for supplements and ready-to-eat items. The cost of each supplement or medication varies.

Is Medi Weightloss safe?

Medi-Weightloss is one of the safest choices for losing weight and keeping it off because the program is overseen by doctors who can adjust your regimen based on your dietary and fitness needs. It can help overweight individuals with diabetes and many chronic health conditions, as your assigned professional will test blood sugar levels and other diagnostics weekly and adjust the diet as needed.

That said, we recommend consulting with your primary care provider before beginning any new diet or supplement and maintaining communication between your Medi-Weightloss professional and your GP if any issues should arise.

Individuals with a history of eating disorders should avoid Medi-Weightloss unless under the care of a physician, counselor, or therapist. Low-carbohydrate diets are also not recommended for athletes and pregnant or nursing individuals.

The cost of Medi-Weightloss programs varies by location and weight-loss needs. Many clinics accept FSA, HSA, and health insurance payments (see below), which may assist with the financial investment.

In general, you can expect to spend between $275 and $325 for your initial consultation. After this, your weekly check-ins will cost $75-80 per visit. If you choose to purchase nutritional injections, supplements, medications, or menu items, this adds to the overall cost.

Is Medi-Weightloss a good value?

Going on a standard Keto or Atkins diet without physician-assisted support is far less expensive than enrolling in Medi-Weightloss. Still, this program is invaluable for people who need the support of a medical professional during their weight-loss journey.

There are very few physician-assisted weight-loss programs like Medi-Weightloss. OPTIFAST costs about $150 per week, while Medi-Weightloss costs less, about $80 per week. However, OPTIFAST includes meal replacements in their cost, and Medi-Weightloss doesn’t. By purchasing your own food with Medi-Weightloss, you may spend around the same amount or more. But, you have the freedom to create your own grocery list under your provider’s guidelines.

HSA, FSA, and health insurance

Many Medi-Weightloss locations now accept insurance payments and offer in-network providers with major carriers. While supplements, medications, and injections may not be covered, your initial consultation and office visits could be.

Medi-Weightloss recommends checking with your insurance provider to see if you are eligible for reimbursement for these treatments. FSA and HSA payments are also welcome at many Medi-Weightloss clinics.
