The AREDS2 formula combines lutein and zeaxanthin with specific amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and copper. Research supporting a reduced risk of progression to advanced AMD applies to that complete formulation in certain people with AMD — not lutein and zeaxanthin alone. Diet

Supplements aren't the only way to get these carotenoids. Astaxanthin occurs naturally in salmon, trout, shrimp, krill, and other pink or red seafood, while lutein and zeaxanthin are abundant in foods such as spinach, kale, collard greens, egg yolks, corn, peas, pistachios, and orange and yellow peppers.

A varied diet also gives you nutrients Astaxanthin+ doesn't provide, including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and other carotenoids. And because carotenoids are fat-soluble, eating these foods with healthy fats — such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, or fatty fish — can improve their absorption.

For people who regularly eat plenty of these foods, supplementation may be less important. But getting consistent, research-backed amounts of all three carotenoids from food alone can be difficult.
