What is Acid Reflux/Heartburn?

Inside of our bodies, when we eat a meal, food travels from the mouth down the esophagus and into the stomach. Where the esophagus opens into the stomach, there is a little band of muscle (a sphincter) very descriptively called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is what normally prevents food and stomach acid from sloshing upward into our esophagus. There many sphincters in our bodies and all of them quietly and unceremoniously do a lot of hard work for us, all of the time.

But when the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes, doesn’t fully close or opens too frequently, then acid from our stomach can move into the esophagus. Acid reflux is the term that describes the event of stomach acid moving from the stomach through the LES and into your esophagus.

Sometimes you may not even realize it has happened. A dry cough, hoarseness or an increased urgency to clear your throat can actually be signs that you have low-grade acid reflux. Other times, however, pronounced discomfort, indigestion, and a burning sensation of “heartburn” provide telltale signs that you’re dealing with acid reflux. These symptoms often follow a heavy meal or become more noticeable when going to bed, but for people who suffer from frequent acid reflux the symptoms can occur on an empty stomach as well.

Whether your reflux is mild or severe, if it is happening frequently enough then you should treat it before the reflux develops into more serious conditions. Acid reflux that generally happens a couple times per week or more frequently is called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Acid reflux is a very common condition for Americans and across the western hemisphere, probably due to a multitude of factors involving diet, physical condition, stress and lifestyle.

What Treatments does Evens offer?

prescription Evens treatment

Evens offers an over-the-counter antacid tablet, in addition to two other over-the-counter acid reflux treatments and four prescription-strength medications to treat your reflux. Aside from the antacid tablets, all of the Evens treatments are PPIs, or “proton pump inhibitors”. With this assortment of treatments, Evens can help you relieve symptoms as they occur or provide effective preventative treatment to stop acid reflux from occurring in the first place.

Through consultation with the Evens doctor, you will be able to access the treatment most suitable for you based on your medical history and reflux symptoms.

Right now, your first shipment of any of the Evens subscription treatments is free – you only pay $3 shipping in order to try the treatment.

What is a proton pump inhibitor?

Our stomach lining contains small pores called gastric pits, which contain many cells that produce and secrete hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes. (Our stomach also secretes mucus in order to protect itself from the caustic acid.) The secretion of acid and other substances involves a series of chemical signals within the stomach. A proton pump inhibitor blocks the enzyme known as gastric proton pump, which would normally be the final signal to our stomachs to produce acid. By blocking the gastric proton pump enzyme, PPIs effectively stops our stomach’s acid production in the final stage.

PPIs are the most commonly prescribed acid reflux medications and are generally the most effective as well. In fact, they’re one of the most commonly prescribed classes of medication prescribed for anything in the world. Evens offers easy access to four different PPIs, two of which are available in both OTC and prescription strength.

All of Evens’ PPI medications are intended to be taken once per day with a glass of water, 30-60 minutes prior to your first meal of the day.

Though these PPI drugs share a common mechanism for how they treat acid reflux, there are differences between them and one person may respond better to one PPI than to another. Your Evens doctor will be able to help you select the best treatment.

Evens Antacid

Evens antacid is essentially generic Tums, a calcium carbonate tablet that you can buy over the counter. Calcium carbonate neutralizes stomach acid that the cells in your stomach lining produce, providing quick relief for acute acid indigestion and heartburn when symptoms are actively occurring.

For $5 a month, Evens will ship you a 60-tablet package of this antacid.

Evens Omeprazole (Generic Prilosec)

Omeprazole is one of the most widely used PPIs and Evens offers it both over-the-counter and prescription strengths.

As an OTC treatment, Evens will ship you 42 tablets every six weeks by default. The strength of the OTC omeprazole is 20mg. Each six weeks, you pay just $21. (If you only purchase one shipment only, you pay $24.)

In its prescription strength of 40mg, Evens ships 30 tablets per month for the same price of $21.

Evens Pantoprazole (Generic Protonix)

Evens offers prescription pantoprazole (20mg) for the same price as prescription omeprazole – $21/month. Each month you can receive a 30-tablet shipment of this prescription acid reflux treatment that many people know more commonly as generic Protonix. This medication is not available over the counter.

You will take pantoprazole once per day, 30-60 minutes prior to your first meal.

Evens Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium)

For $21 per month in a subscription (or $24 for a single month), Evens offers OTC esomeprazole in 6-week shipments of 42 tablets. Each tablet provides 20mg of the medication. People commonly know this medication as generic Nexium.

Evens also can provide prescription-strength (40mg) esomeprazole tablets in a 30-tablet shipment each month for $35.

Evens Rabeprazole (Generic AcipHex)

Evens rabeprazole is only available by prescription and comes in a one-month supply of 30 20mg tablets for $35 each month.
