Cervix with Mucous Plug

The cervix with a mucous plug prevents breakage of the amniotic sac or leakage of the vital amniotic fluid. The cervix is the lower one-third of the uterus; during pregnancy, a thick mucous plug seals the cervical orifice (the opening to the uterus).
