Removable Partial Dentures
If several teeth are missing, or if adjacent teeth are not healthy
enough to be abutments, a form of removable restorative device
called a partial denture may be used. Partial dentures have (3)
basic components in their design: (1) a framework that fits against
the gums and other soft tissue of the mouth, (2) attachments
connecting the framework to remaining natural teeth called clasps
or rests, and (3) artificial, or prosthetic teeth mounted on the
framework. Unlike bridges, partial dentures are not entirely
supported by adjacent teeth but also by the gums and jawbones upon
which the framework rests. A partial denture, whenever possible,
is attached to the natural teeth to prevent loosening or shifting.
Partial dentures can be designed to derive most of its support from
the natural teeth, or some support from the teeth, but more support
from gum and bone tissue, or all of its support from gum and bone
tissue.
