Onlays
Onlays are essentially large fillings. The term only is used when
it is necessary to replace a substantial portion of the crown.
Onlays are used to restore teeth that have become severely damaged
by decay or wear, and must be made of durable material to withstand
heavy chewing pressure. Metals are most commonly used, although
porcelain is occasionally used. The use of metal onlays is
generally limited to the back teeth for cosmetic reasons. They are
fabricated, inserted and cemented in place like cast metal
fittings.
