Toppik Reviews: Are these hair-building fibers right for you?

We evaluated Toppik to see how it stands up to the competition

Last Updated: Feb 21, 2022
Toppik Reviews

If you struggle with hair thinning or hair loss, you’re far from alone. Studies show that by the age of 35, two-thirds of American men experience noticeable hair loss, and by age 50, 85% have significantly thinning hair. And it’s not just men – an estimated 40% of hair loss sufferers are women.

Hair loss may not be a significant health risk, but it does bear consequences. Among both men and women suffering from hair thinning, most report feelings of depression, increased social anxiety, and diminished self-image.

There are many different avenues to take in approaching hair loss, from topical treatments to medications to supplements to laser caps, but even successful therapies can have side effects. We decided to try out Toppik Hair Building Fibers to see if they might be a safer alternate path to fuller hair. Read our full review below to see if Toppik might work for you.

We recommend Toppik Hair Building Fibers and accessories for those with hair thinning and loss who want to avoid pharmaceutical treatments or expensive and risky hair replacement options. Toppik products are affordable, relatively easy to use, and appear natural. Additionally, Toppik honors a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, demonstrating confidence in its products.

What is Toppik?

Toppik makes topical hair fiber products that conceal thinning and balding patches and create the illusion of fuller, thicker hair. The keratin microfibers that comprise Toppik Hair Building Fibers cling to and blend with your natural hair, adding bulk and retaining a natural appearance. It promises the following benefits:

  • Conceals hair loss
  • Works as a root touch-up between colorings
  • Resistant to wind, rain, and perspiration
  • Easily washes out with shampoo

In addition to its main product, Hair Building Fibers, Toppik also creates several accessories for application, styling, and maintenance.

How Toppik Hair Building Fibers work

Toppik Hair Building Fibers are made from high-quality keratin protein derived from wool and dyed in one of nine colors for the closest match to your hair. These fibers have a natural static charge, allowing them to magnetically bond to your own hair, no matter how thin it may be. The result is the appearance of thicker hair and hidden bald spots.

The use of high-quality natural keratin sets Toppik apart from many of its competitors. Products with microfibers derived from cotton, rayon, and other plant-derived or synthetic sources do not share the same static charge and thus react differently when applied. They may clump or drift onto the scalp, creating an unnatural effect. Toppik Hair Building Fibers hold onto your hair through rain, wind, and perspiration, yet wash out when you next shampoo.

Toppik fibers do not encourage or discourage hair growth and should not clog pores. In addition to keratin, Toppik Hair Building Fibers include the following ingredients, primarily as cosmetic preservatives:

  • Silica
  • Ammonium chloride
  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Chlorphenesin

Colors, sizes, and pricing

Toppik Hair Building Fibers come in nine different colors. If you cannot find a shade that adequately matches your hair color (particularly with blonde and gray shades), Toppik recommends mixing colors as needed. Colors include:

  • Black
  • Dark Brown
  • Medium Brown
  • Light Brown
  • Medium Blonde
  • Light Blonde
  • Auburn
  • Gray
  • White

You can purchase Toppik Hair Building Fibers from big-box retailers, online retailers, and through the company website. One advantage of buying directly from Toppik is that you can set up a subscription service for 10% off all products. The subscription membership is free to join, and you can cancel at any time. One-off purchases of Hair Building Fibers on the Toppik website cost:

  • Travel size (0.11 oz): $7.95
  • Regular size (0.42 oz): $24.95
  • Economy size (0.97 oz): $46.95
  • Giant size (1.94 oz): $79.95

Does Toppik work?

Toppik does not promote, restore, or deter hair growth. It works as a concealment product, effectively hiding bald or thinning spots and creating the illusion of thicker hair. Toppik was very effective in our testing and appeared natural in both sunlight and artificial light. However, we do not recommend using it on areas with complete balding, as the fibers will have nothing to cling to and appear artificial on bare skin.

Sets and Accessories

To assist with the application and upkeep of its Hair Building Fibers, Toppik offers two accessories, two additional products, and a few combination kits. We’ve briefly detailed these below:

  • Spray Applicator ($19.95) - This patented spray applicator tool attaches to the Regular and Economy size bottles of Toppik Hair Fibers, allowing for a more precise application, particularly near the hairline and other delicate areas.
  • Hairline Optimizer ($4.95) - The Hairline Optimizer is a small comb with uniquely designed, irregular teeth to help you mimic a natural hairline when applying Toppik Hair Fibers.
  • FiberHold Spray ($9.95) - This fine-mist hairspray strengthens the bond between Toppik Hair Fibers and your existing hair.
  • Colored Hair Thickener ($19.95) - This color spray solution was designed to disguise areas of thin or thinning hair and can be used with Toppik Hair Building Fibers for additional coverage and texture.
  • Hair Perfecting Duo ($19.95) - This accessory set includes the Toppik Spray Applicator and the Hairline Optimizer.
  • Hair Fibers Starter Set ($34.95) - This three-piece starter kit consists of a Regular size Toppik Hair Fibers, the Toppik Hairline Optimizer, and the Toppik Spray Applicator.

Is Toppik safe?

Overall, Toppik ranks among the safer options of hair thinning products on the market, especially compared with medications, supplements, and surgeries. All Toppik products are considered safe for adults. However, at least two of the ingredients in Toppik Hair Building Fibers (phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin) might cause adverse reactions such as rash due to allergic response. If you notice any allergic reactions, we advise you to discontinue use and consult with a dermatologist or general practitioner.

Is Toppik a good value?

Toppik is the most popular among hair-loss concealment products on the market and stands high above the competition regarding user ratings and reviews. Pricewise, it falls within a close range as well, with most products averaging between $35 - 50 per 30g container.

For added savings, we recommend setting up the subscription service through the Toppik website to earn 10% off all products.

Getting started

The shaker bottle is adequate to apply Toppik Hair Building Fibers on larger areas of thinning hair, but for more intricate areas like the front hairline, we suggest using the Hairline Optimizer and the Spray Applicator in conjunction.

Once the product has been sprinkled or sprayed over areas requiring coverage, lightly pat on the hair to set it. If desired, you can mist the FiberHold Spray on the surface for extended hold.

If you decide to purchase Toppik, we recommend watching its useful tutorial videos featured on the company’s website. These videos demonstrate the application of Hair Building Fibers on men and women with varying hairstyles and offer helpful tips and tricks.

How we evaluate health services

At Innerbody Research, we customize our evaluation criteria depending on the type and nature of the health-related service or product. But in general for health products and services, we have five broad areas that we explore in our evaluations, including:

Quality: How well does the company deliver its core service(s) to the customer? For testing services, does the company adhere to the latest and most advanced testing technologies and achieve a very high degree of accuracy? For non-testing telemedical or teletherapy services, is the quality of the service high enough that we would recommend it to loved ones without hesitation? If not, why not? For health products, does the product or device meet a high level of safety? Is it manufactured with high quality standards? Has it – or have its ingredients – been subjected to studies that confirm effectiveness?

User-friendly: How intuitive and convenient is the service or product? Does the device, program, app, or website achieve a good degree of user-friendliness for its customers?

Value: Are you getting your money’s worth? Are there any hidden costs or charges? Does the company offer discounts?

Privacy: If health data is stored, will your data be stored securely? Are payments secure? Does a company market your information?

Customer support: Particularly in situations where ‘one size fits all’ doesn’t make sense, how well does the company help to make the service or product ideal for you or address your individual needs?
