Fortunately, online retailers have developed several products to help the home athlete, from exercise machines to muscle recovery devices. About Theragun

Therabody, founded initially as Theragun, is a health and wellness company manufacturing total-body recovery products. The company’s story dates back to 2007 when founder Dr. Jason Wersland endured multiple motorcycle accident injuries while completing his chiropractic school studies. Suffering from painful soft tissue damage, Wersland began using vibrating massagers based on fellow trainers’ and therapists’ advice. These devices provided relief, but the results were not lasting. Wersland eventually set out to create a device that could better penetrate deep tissue and promote longer-lasting muscular relief.

Theragun’s products

For almost a decade, Wersland developed several prototypes for a percussive therapy gun that he would finally release as the Theragun in 2016. Since then, the company has continued to improve its devices’ frequencies, amplitude, and torque while reducing noise and adding high-tech features.

The company is now offering fourth-generation Theraguns that feature smart app integration and far quieter motors than the previous iterations. We’ve evaluated the main Theragun products below.

In May of 2020, Theragun expanded into the development and marketing of CBD products and rebranded itself as Therabody. Its several CBD products aim to reduce stress, tension, and muscle soreness.

While the most obvious targets for Theragun products are professional athletes and trainers, we believe they can benefit virtually anyone willing and able to make the investment.

How does Theragun work?

Percussive therapy is a type of massage providing rapid bursts of pressure against the muscles. These percussions increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and help to break up muscle knotting after workouts. By releasing muscle tension and allowing for greater flexibility, these percussions are also beneficial in warming up for workouts. Percussive therapy guns provide similar treatment as the tapotement technique used in Swedish massage.

To use a Theragun product, follow these basic instructions:

  1. Turn the Theragun on while it is away from your body.

  2. Rest the Theragun against your body in the area that you would like to target. Position the device so that the ball is pulsing directly into the muscle.

  3. Slowly glide the Theragun along the muscle.

  4. If you encounter a muscle knot, allow the Theragun to rest in that area without additional pressure.

  5. Breathe deeply as you move the Theragun to each new muscle area.

Theragun also features several specialized massage routines via videos on its website or through its app. These workouts target office workers with neck tension, golfers, runners, weight-lifters, and more.

Theragun PRO

PRICE: $599

The Theragun PRO is the company’s top-of-the-line percussive massage gun. With an amplitude of 16 mm and 60 pounds of stall force, it provides deep tissue penetration for athletic recovery and use by professional trainers and therapists. The PRO features an adjustable arm as well as Theragun’s signature triangular handle. This ergonomic handle shape allows for several different grip positions, ensuring you can reach all areas of your body and setting Theragun products apart from (and above) the competition.

The fourth-generation PRO has a QX150 Motor with QuietForce Technology, making it 55% quieter than the previous generation. It can hold 300 minutes of battery life and comes with two interchangeable Lithium-ion batteries and a charger. The PRO features an OLED screen, a customizable speed range, and smart app integration via Bluetooth. The Theragun app combines Apple Health and Google Fit to suggest guided routines based on your behaviors.

The Theragun PRO also comes with five attachments made of easy-to-clean, non-porous closed-cell foam and a Supersoft Attachment for sensitive areas and bones. Buying it means you can enjoy a two-year warranty and a free 30-day subscription to VARIIS digital fitness classes and the Percussive Therapy Live Digital Course from master trainers.

Theragun Elite

PRICE: $399

The Theragun Elite is another massage gun that has improved dramatically in its fourth-generation iteration. Its QX65 Motor with QuietForce Technology makes it 75% quieter than the previous generation, delivering up to 40 pounds of no-stall force.

Like the PRO, the Elite features a triangular handle for ergonomic multi-grip positions. It sports 120 minutes of battery life, smart app integration with Bluetooth, and a customizable speed range with 16 mm amplitude. The Elite includes five closed-cell foam attachments.

Theragun Prime

PRICE: $299

Of the three main Theragun models, the Prime is the most basic, aimed more at non-professional athletes or individuals who want to attain tension relief from day-to-day stress or minor injury. It has the same 16 mm amplitude as the Elite and PRO but delivers less no-stall force (30 pounds).

The 2.2-pound Prime model has a total battery capacity of 120 minutes, a customizable speed range, and the same triangular ergonomic multi-grip and smart app capabilities as its higher-priced counterparts. The fourth-generation iteration of the Prime is 70% quieter than the previous generation. It comes with four closed-cell foam attachments, a carrying pouch, and a power adapter.

Theragun mini

PRICE: $199

The most affordable and compact of the Theragun lineup is the Theragun mini. Although it does not feature the triangular multi-grip handle as the main models, it is lightweight and capable of reaching difficult areas like the back without muscle strain.

The mini features 150 minutes of total battery life and three speed settings. QuietForce Technology makes the mini the quietest of the Theraguns, with top speeds of 2,400 percussions per minute and 20 pounds of stalling force. It comes with a soft case, the standard ball attachment, and a power adapter.

Wave Roller and accessories

The Wave Roller ($149) is a Bluetooth-enabled Smart Foam Roller that features five intensity settings and three hours of battery life. With wavy grooves like tire tread, it maximizes tension, allowing you to reach the ideal pressure amount. The vibration therapy provided by the Wave Roller allows for muscle recovery while offering full-body support.

Accessories

Theragun offers several different accessories to enhance its line of Theragun models. They include:

  • Wireless Charging Stands ($59-$79)
  • Multi-Device Wireless Charger ($79)
  • World Travel Charger ($29)
  • Attachments ($20-$30)
