What is Shakeology?

Manufactured by the famous fitness company Beachbody, Shakeology is a line of health shakes that incorporates the qualities of meal replacements, protein shakes, and probiotic multivitamin supplements. Some of Shakeology’s benefits include:

  • Provides a boost of energy
  • Helps curb cravings
  • Supports healthy digestion
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Benefits overall health

Shakeology shakes come in a powder formula that you blend with water, almond milk, or other favorite beverages. You’ll drink them daily to fill nutritional gaps and replace meals and snacks. This nourishing powder provides:

  • Probiotics

  • Antioxidants
  • Protein
  • Fiber
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Phytonutrients
  • Superfoods
  • Digestive enzymes
  • Omega-3

Shakeology offers several flavors that set it above most nutrition shake producers. These blends are not as gritty as many competitors, and they satisfy various tastes. Shakeology provides both vegan and whey-based options, including:

  • Cookies & Creamy Plant-Based Vegan Shakeology
  • Chocolate Whey Shakeology
  • Chocolate Plant-Based Vegan Shakeology
  • Vanilla Whey Shakeology

Beachbody does not recommend using Shakeology beverages as a replacement for more than one meal per day, as they are low in calories. However, replacing more meals is feasible if you fortify your shakes with other fruit or milk options. We recommend perusing the Beachbody website, where you’ll find recipe resources to incorporate Shakeology powders into various smoothies and even baked goods.

Does Shakeology work?

Shakeology effectively promotes weight loss when you use it to replace one meal per day. However, you’ll often want to fortify your shakes with additional calories from milk or milk substitutes and fruits if used for this purpose. Too much of a calorie deficit can be harmful to your weight loss goals. If you use Shakeology to supplement a low-calorie diet (without completely replacing any meals), it still assists in weight loss by providing cravings suppression and nutrients to boost energy.

Shakeology provides digestive enzymes and probiotics that aid in restoring your gut microbiome and adaptogens that help reduce stress and anxiety. These ingredients work together to pave a holistic path toward better mental and physical wellbeing.

In testing Shakeology, we experienced fewer cravings, increased energy, better overall mood, and improved digestive health. We believe the product stands above the competition based on its broad spectrum of high-quality ingredients and its commitment to bringing about weight loss from multiple angles.

How Shakeology works

Unlike many top-selling protein shakes, Shakeology provides an abundance of vitamins, nutrients, digestive enzymes, and adaptogens to supply your mind and body with boosted energy, better mood, and cravings suppression. The ingredients in each flavor vary, but most products contain the proprietary blends detailed below.

Proprietary protein blend

Shakeology offers both vegan and non-vegan supplements. You’ll find plant-based proteins in the vegan versions, including those derived from peas, flax seeds, rice, and quinoa. The non-vegan supplements include whey protein. Protein supplementation supports:

  • Healthy hair and nails
  • Lean muscle development
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Appetite reduction
  • Bone health
  • Reduced blood pressure

Proprietary superfruit and antioxidant blend

Shakdeology’s superfruit and antioxidant blend protects your body against free radicals that can damage cells and lead to aging. Some of the ingredients in this blend include:

  • Blueberry
  • Bilberry
  • Acerola cherry
  • Camu-Camu
  • Goji berry
  • Pomegranate
  • Rosehips

Some of the benefits of the antioxidants and superfruits in Shakeology blends include:

  • Helps prevent cancer and disease
  • Boosts immunity
  • Fights cellular damage
  • Provides essential vitamins and nutrients

Proprietary super-green and phytonutrient blend

Phytonutrients are compounds derived from plant sources that support human health and prevent chronic disease. Some of the benefits of phytonutrients include:

  • Prevents heart disease
  • Reduces risk of certain cancers
  • Reduces risk of Type 2 diabetes
  • Prevents lung disease
  • Supports intercellular communication
  • Delays cellular aging

Some ingredients included in Shakeology’s super-green and antioxidant blend are:

Proprietary adaptogen blend

Adaptogens are herbs and mushrooms that benefit human health and help with stress reduction. Researchers continue to study adaptogens for their role in promoting:

  • Mental performance and focus
  • Reduced fatigue
  • Injury recovery
  • Protection from oxidative damage
  • Reduced risk of neurodegenerative disease
  • Boosted immunity
  • Reduced cholesterol
  • Increased physical stamina

Some adaptogens in Shakeology products include:

Proprietary pre- and probiotic digestive enzyme blend

Probiotics are healthy bacteria that support digestion by diversifying your gut microbiome. Prebiotics are natural fibers that feed this beneficial bacteria. By including prebiotics and probiotics in its powder blends, Shakeology not only aids your digestion but also supports mental health via the brain-gut connection.

Probiotics occur naturally in fermented foods, including yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha. Ingredients in Shakeology’s digestive blend include:

  • Bacillus Coagulans
  • Yacon root
  • Chicory root
  • Amylase
  • Glucoamylase
  • Pea fiber

How does it taste?

The consensus on taste was divided among the members of our team. While some found Shakeology shakes less chalky than many competitors, others struggled with the texture. This also varied between the vegan and non-vegan versions of each flavor.

The testers that mixed the powder with water and ice alone had the most complaints, while those who opted for almond milk smoothies or similar alternatives with added fruits raved the most. Bananas, in particular, were a favorite addition to all of the regular and seasonal options.

The limited-time-only Peppermint-Mocha flavor was the winner for taste among our team, followed closely by Café Latte Whey, which has a creamy decadence that’ll surpass your morning Starbucks.

Is Shakeology safe?

Shakeology supplements are safe for adults 18 and older, but as with all dietary supplements, we recommend talking with your doctor before beginning any new regimen. This is particularly true if you suffer from any food allergies, take medication(s), have a chronic medical condition, or are pregnant or nursing.

Some users experience digestive issues like bloating and gas when beginning Shakeology and other nutritional shakes. Beachbody suggests starting with a half dosage and gradually building up to a full dose for these individuals. If discomfort persists, you should discontinue using the product and consult with your physician.

Users should note that Shakeology products are manufactured in a facility that also processes the following allergens:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat
  • Peanuts
  • Soy

Pricing

Shakeology products are available exclusively through the Beachbody website and app. The retail price for all traditional flavors is $129.95 for a 30-serving bag or 24 individual packets. Limited-edition seasonal flavors like Peppermint Mocha Plant-Based Vegan Shakeology cost $74.95 for 14 individual packets.

Enrolling in Shakeology’s subscription membership program is free and earns up to 20% off future orders. Subscription orders cost a flat rate of $3 for shipping and handling, and non-subscription orders are $5.

If you enter into Beachbody’s coaching program, you’ll pay a membership fee of $15.95 per month and receive 25% off all orders. This program allows you to earn commissions for sales of Beachbody products.

Is Shakeology a good value?

Shakeology is in the upper range for pricing among meal replacement shakes and weight loss supplements, but it also provides a broader range of ingredients than many options on the market. For instance, Slimfast products are far lower in cost, but they do not offer the adaptogens and superfoods boasted in Shakeology drinks.

Below, we’ve laid out the prices for Shakeology side-by-side with some of the closest comparisons in terms of ingredients to give you a better idea of how they rank. Prices below are for single orders and do not reflect any savings from bundle purchases or subscription memberships.

  30-day supply Price per serving
Shakeology $129.95 $4.33
Athletic Greens AG1 $99 $3.30
Slimfast High Protein $44.97 $1.50
Kachava $139.90 $4.66

How we evaluate health products and services

At Innerbody Research, we customize our evaluation criteria depending on the type and nature of the health-related service or product. But in general, for health products and services, we have five broad areas that we explore in our evaluations, including:

Quality: How well does the company deliver its core service(s) to the customer? For testing services, does the company adhere to the latest and most advanced testing technologies and achieve a very high degree of accuracy? For non-testing telemedical or teletherapy services, is the quality of the service high enough that we would recommend it to loved ones without hesitation? If not, why not? For health products, does the product or device meet a high level of safety? Is it manufactured with high-quality standards? Has it – or have its ingredients – been subjected to studies that confirm effectiveness?

User-friendly: How intuitive and convenient is the service or product? Does the device, program, app, or website achieve a good degree of user-friendliness for its customers?

Value: Are you getting your money’s worth? Are there any hidden costs or charges? Does the company offer discounts?

Privacy: If health data is stored, will your data be stored securely? Are payments secure? Does a company market your information?

Customer support: Particularly in situations where ‘one size fits all’ doesn’t make sense, how well does the company help make the service or product ideal for you or address your individual needs?
