The thyroid is essential for all parts of your body to function properly. It’s a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in your neck that is responsible for producing two major hormones: T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). These chemical substances control how you use energy (your metabolism), helping to regulate heart rate, body temperature, digestion, brain health, and more. Most T3 and T4 are bound to proteins in the blood, but a small portion aren’t bound and circulate as free hormones.
The amount of T3 and T4 that your thyroid gland secretes is regulated by your pituitary gland. It senses thyroid hormone levels in your blood and works to maintain stable amounts of T3 and T4.
- If T3 and T4 levels are low, the pituitary gland secretes TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) to make the thyroid produce more T4, and ultimately more T3.
- When thyroid hormone levels are normal, the pituitary gland stops secreting so that the thyroid makes less T4.

Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism means that the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:
- Tiredness
- Weight gain
- Weakness
- Muscle and joint aches
- Hair loss
- Depression
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sensitivity to cold
- Memory loss
- Constipation
- Heavy or irregular periods
Common causes include:
- Autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
- Surgical removal of the thyroid
- Radiation therapy
- Certain medications
- Too little iodine
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism means that the thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:
- Increased appetite
- Nervousness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Enlarged thyroid (goiter)
- Sensitivity to heat
- Dry hair
- Hair thinning or loss
- Changes in menstrual cycle, such as light or missed periods
- Infertility
Common causes include:
- Grave’s disease (the most common cause of hyperthyroidism)
- Hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules
- Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid
- Excess iodine
