Persona Nutrition Reviews

Will personalized supplements be better for you? We explored Persona Nutrition’s services to give you all the details.

Last Updated: Mar 29, 2022
Persona Nutrition

The world of supplements can be overwhelming to a newcomer. With so many different vitamins and minerals that our bodies need, and so many different manufacturers you can choose from, you might start with a multivitamin to cover your nutritional needs. Considering about one-third of adults in the United States take a daily multivitamin, you wouldn’t be alone.

However, not all multivitamins are created equally. Unless you’re eating a poor diet or have a malabsorptive disorder like celiac disease, it’s unlikely that you actually need every vitamin that a multivitamin supplies. Instead, finding the right individual supplements for you could be the best way to improve your daily health.

Persona Nutrition is a personalized supplement subscription service that matches you with the best vitamins, minerals, herbs, and supplements to help you improve your health and lifestyle goals. We looked into Persona Nutrition to see if their supplement service is as good as – or better than – a daily multivitamin. We’ve got the most up-to-date information so you can decide if Persona Nutrition is right for you.

And with resources like a supplement-medication interaction database and access to nutritionists you can call, email, or chat with for more help, Persona Nutrition’s customer-focused approach is likely to win over even the most hardcore vitamin skeptic.

Why you should trust us

Over the past two decades, Innerbody Research has helped tens of millions of readers make more informed decisions about staying healthy and living healthier lifestyles.

We extensively test each health service or product we review. Our content provides you, our readers, with an unbiased exploration of at-home health options, free of marketing jargon or gimmicks. We evaluate products and services based on their adherence to quality and the latest medical evidence and health standards. We ask ourselves two simple questions: Would we buy the product or service ourselves if it weren’t part of our job? Would we recommend it to family and friends?

Additionally, like all health-related content on this website, this review was thoroughly vetted by one or more members of our Medical Review Board for accuracy.

What is Persona Nutrition?

In 2016, businessman Jason Brown, health and wellness specialist Tamara Bernadot, and technical developer Prem Thudia co-founded Persona Nutrition, known colloquially as Persona. Persona is a subscription service that ships packets of supplements to your doorstep every four weeks. They allow for the personalization of your supplement regimen with a guiding hand to help you find what you need. Much of Persona’s framework uses information as your best advocate, transparently providing everything you need to understand and make informed decisions.

Historically, Persona has partnered with Vitamin Angels, a charity that provides vitamin A to children in need to help eliminate childhood malnutrition. They have donated at Vitamin Angel’s $100,000+ annually tier, meaning that they’ve helped support the cause by donating between $100,000 and $249,999 a year. However, most of the information about this partnership vanished in early 2022 on both Vitamin Angel’s and Persona’s websites, leaving only traces and broken links, so it seems unlikely that Persona has continued being a corporate partner.

Science and research

Making sure that they’re creating and selling vitamins that work is important to the team at Persona. Tamara Bernadot, Chief Nutrition Officer, personally ensures that all supplements are properly assessed, sourced, and manufactured with the latest research and highest quality standards. Persona’s Medical Advisory Board is made of eight professional dieticians and physicians whose credentials are available for all to see. And when it comes to the supplements themselves, they are scrutinized from every angle to ensure that they’re being made with the best possible ingredients with an FDA-approved method (though no supplements themselves are approved by the FDA).

Persona thinks that the planet’s health is just as important as our health as individuals. Their paper packaging is locally sourced from sustainable producers in their home state of Washington, supporting local jobs while keeping their carbon footprint small. These shipping boxes are made from recycled material and new fibers from sustainable forestry, and their dispensers come from recycled consumer waste. Dispensers are designed with strength in mind so that you can use them for up to six months; they’ll only send you two a year, so be sure to refill your dispenser with your next months’ packets every time.

Who is Persona best for?

Some supplement companies are better for those just getting started; others are more hands-off and better for those who know exactly what they want out of a vitamin regimen. Persona is in the unique position of being approachable for both groups. For people who’ve been taking supplements for years or those who have medical directions, Persona provides enough freedom to pick and choose your supplements. At the same time, the company gives sufficient support to those who need extra help along the way.

Persona’s daily supplements come in premade packets, labeled with the time of day they’re supposed to be taken (morning, evening, or bedtime). If you frequently forget to take your supplements or need a hand staying on top of things, the packet’s design and their automatic shipment for refills can help tremendously.

The assessment is not designed for people under 18. That means that the packets shouldn’t be taken by anyone under 18, either. However, if you’re a parent and looking to supplement your child or teen’s diet with some vitamins, they offer a few gummy vitamins designed for children and teens:

  • Multivitamins (children and teens)
  • Immune support (children and teens)
  • Cognitive support (teens)

How does Persona Nutrition work?

You’ll start your journey with Persona by assessing your health and lifestyle, which is on the longer side but is incredibly thorough. The assessment automatically generates the best vitamins and supplements based on your answers to support your health and lifestyle goals. After taking the assessment, you’ll be invited to learn more about the vitamins and supplements Persona has recommended and modify your list.

Currently, Persona offers more than 90 different supplements in the following general categories:

  • Women’s health
  • Prenatal health
  • Men’s health
  • Bariatric health
  • Fitness
  • Sleep
  • Energy
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Weight support
  • Immune defense
  • Healthy aging
  • Digestion
  • Detox
  • Hair, skin, and nail support
  • Hemp extract/CBD

Each supplement that they offer has its own web page. These indexes give information about the supplement, how it works to help your health (with data from recent research studies), common medication interactions, how and when to take it, an ingredients list, and more. These are intuitively designed pages that allow you to learn all of the important information about supplements you’re taking without ever relying on scientific jargon to make their point.

Once you’ve picked out your vitamins and supplements, Persona Nutrition will ship you a box with 28 packets. These are four weeks’ worth of individual servings, each containing an appropriate daily dose of all of the supplements in your plan. Your first box, and every six months after, will also include a reusable paper dispenser to hold all of your packets.

Persona marketplace

If you aren’t sure you want to commit to their test or just want something simple to start, Persona offers a marketplace full of pre-formulated packets for dozens of health essentials. These include:

  • Sleep ($30.99/month)
  • Stress & Immunity ($39.99/month)
  • Women’s 50+ Complete ($73.99/month)
  • Men’s 50+ Complete ($83.99/month)
  • Beauty Within ($66.99/month)
  • Energy ($21.99/month)
  • Women’s Ultra ($67.99/month)
  • Men’s Ultra ($54.99/month)
  • CBD Pain ($80.99/month)
  • CBD Sleep ($62.99/month)
  • CBD Stress ($73.99/month)
  • Weight Loss Support ($40.99/month)

Here, they also sell several partner products, such as:

  • Collagen peptides
  • Immune-boosting powders
  • Apple cider vinegar gummies
  • Tru Niagen
  • Sugar-free vitamin gummies

Not every partner product is made with Persona’s high standards in mind, and not all of them are proven to work effectively. This is mostly an issue for their gummy vitamins since gummies have added sugar and are harder for the body to break down properly for nutrient digestion. Likewise, apple cider vinegar is still questionable as a supplement that helps to modulate blood sugar and decrease appetite (though research is pointing in a positive direction right now).

Anything from the Persona marketplace can be added to your next order or shipped on its own.

If you’re struggling with finding the right supplement or don’t know where to start, Persona has a team of 26 nutritionists and dieticians at the ready. Their customer service is staffed almost entirely by people with degrees and certifications in the field, so whether you’re sending an email or setting up a one-on-one phone call appointment to address your needs, a professional will be on the other end to help. You can reach out to customer service through phone calls, email, or in-browser chat seven days a week, between 5 AM and 6 PM Pacific Time. Plus, this support is always free.

Drug-nutrient interaction (DNI) database

Trying to add a new supplement on top of prescription medication can be confusing at best. There are dozens of ways medications can interact with each other to null one another out or, even worse, create unintended side effects. For example, something as seemingly innocuous as taking melatonin to help you sleep at night can sometimes exacerbate the sedative effects of common antihistamine allergy medications. However, no studies have found any serious consequences of taking both at once. When it comes to your health, the last thing you want is to feel worse while trying to improve yourself.

To help you avoid complications from the outset, Persona has created a giant drug-nutrient interaction (DNI) database for your use. This program allows you to plug in the name of any medication you’re taking and get a list of all the supplements that might have any adverse effects so you can avoid them or ask your doctor about using them first. If you can’t find your medication in their database, you’re encouraged to reach out to their team of nutritionists via in-browser chat, phone call, or email. The nutritionists will know or have the resources to find an answer for you quickly.

Pricing and payments

The average price of a Persona subscription varies wildly depending on the type and number of supplements in your pack. Persona lists their supplements’ prices as a daily cost, so you’ll need to multiply each price by 28 to see what you’ll pay every month.

For the most part, supplements range between $0.06 and $1.54 per day, with most products falling between $0.15 and $0.70 daily. This translates to between $4.20 and $19.60 per shipment per month. These prices are quite reasonable for supplements, as competitors’ prices vary wildly but tend to range between $5 and $40 for a one-month supply depending on the type of supplement you’re purchasing.

While their monthly prices are reasonable for one supplement, keep in mind that most packs and pre-prepared sets come in groups of between three and six supplements at a time. Packs can add up fast if you’re not careful, so keep an eye on your regimen’s total cost. Some premade packs from the marketplace can offer the same benefits at a lower price.

You can purchase your packets with all major credit cards and PayPal.

Persona will ship you a new set of supplements every 28 days. This ensures that you get your supplements consistently, so you never have to worry about running out. If you live in the United States, shipping for orders over $50 before any discounts is free. Any orders less than $50 will have an $8 shipping charge.

There aren’t any options to rush ship your supplements (though you can always reach out to customer service if you think you’ll need your supplements quickly). All orders ship within two to three business days, and shipping takes another two to five business days.

If you live anywhere other than the United States, you’re still in luck: Persona ships to almost every country. There’s a slight price increase on international shipping; you’ll pay between $5 and $25 in shipping fees per package depending on the number of pills you’ve ordered and where you live – but there are a few other restrictions.

Some countries have banned specific ingredients or have strict requirements about their sale. The known restrictions that Persona cannot accommodate are:

  • Alpha-lipoic acid (can’t be shipped to Korea)
  • Melatonin 300mcg (can’t be shipped to Korea)
  • Melatonin 3mg (can’t be shipped to Japan or Korea)
  • Fermented ginseng (can’t be shipped to Japan)
  • L-Tryptophan (can’t be shipped to Canada)
  • CBD hemp extract (can’t ship outside the United States)

Is Persona Nutrition a good value?

We think that Persona Nutrition is a great value. It might not be the cheapest, and ordering multiple vitamins at once quickly adds up, but each supplement is competitively priced. Think of it like ordering multiple bottles of supplements at once. While it might not be the best for ordering in bulk, especially considering it runs on 28-day shipments, the quality you get from Persona is unmatched. This quality goes beyond the ingredients, and you see excellent work in their nutrition, sustainability, and customer service spheres. Persona Nutrition appears to genuinely care about their customers, a trait not always shared by vitamin retailers. All that excellence comes without premium prices for your best health.

Privacy considerations

Like most online retailers, Persona collects some of your personal information that you voluntarily give them, like your name and address, to get your product to you. Since one of their most significant selling points is a highly in-depth survey that collects a lot of your health information, keep in mind that they will hang onto this information. However, they won’t sell or share this information with third parties. They might provide other information you provide with service providers, third-party marketing vendors, or affiliates, but always stick to the Digital Advertising Alliance’s (DAA’s) Self-Regulatory Principles for transparency in digital advertising.

Persona Nutrition offers a handy form to request that your information is not sold, which is a step above many similar companies.

Getting started with Persona

To get started with Persona, you’ll need to take their assessment. This assessment is thorough, asking you questions about a wide range of health topics. Here, we’ll list it all out for you so you know what to expect.

Altogether, the assessment took our testers less than 10 minutes to complete. After you’ve finished, Persona will automatically generate a packet of vitamins and supplements for you based on your answers. For example, one of our testers received:

  • A multivitamin
  • Vitamin D3
  • Omega-3
  • Cordyceps for energy support
  • Bilberry for eye health

You can look at all of the recommended supplements and change them as you like. If there are things you think that Persona didn’t accurately cover in their assessment, you can add new supplements and additional goodies from their marketplace. And if you’re not ready to purchase just yet, you can also create an account (which requires setting a password) and save your recommendation for later.
