Opencare Review

If you’ve ever had a bad dental appointment or moved to a new area and wondered which dentist to choose, you’re certainly not alone. Finding your ideal dentist is a lot like finding the right primary care doctor, but potentially even more stressful for many of us who have anxiety surrounding our trips to the dentist.

Opencare is a company providing a service they hope will greatly help all of us in those situations. Opencare wants you to use their service (for no cost!) in order to find your ideal dentist. They try to take all the guesswork out of it and make the process as quick and easy as possible.

But how well does Opencare’s service work? We thoroughly tested Opencare in order to find out, and here we’ll give you all of the pros, cons and various details to help you decide if it’s right for you.

Review Summary

  • Opencare is totally free of charge.
  • Extensive network of vetted, top-quality dentists.
  • Opencare tailors to your schedule.
  • Thoughtful questionnaire accounts for your personal priorities
  • Generous reimbursement if you don’t like your dentist.
  • $75 Visa gift card as a reward for signing up!

  • Not available in all locations.

Bottom Line

Opencare makes it pretty darn easy to narrow down a good list of high-quality dentists based on the things that are most important to you. The company is transparent about its criteria for allowing dentists into its network, which means you can trust that you will be seeing a good dentist. That’s always half the battle, isn’t it? We can recommend Opencare for finding a good local dentist for you, and the best part is it’s free for you to use.

Our Top Picks

Opencare

Opencare takes the guesswork out of finding a good dentist. If their network serves your area, we can recommend them.

By learning about you and your individual goals and priorities, and partnering with only top-notch dentists, Opencare provides a valuable service to save you time when looking for good dental care. And it’s free!

Why you should trust us

Innerbody recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary. Over the past two decades, we have helped tens of millions of readers make more informed decisions about staying healthy and living healthier lifestyles.

This review, like all medical-related content on Innerbody, is thoroughly vetted by one or more members of our Medical Review Board for accuracy. Additionally, we extensively analyze each medical service we review. We evaluate the entire patient experience from signing up to receiving medicine in the mail and then offer unbiased, marketing-jargon-free analysis based on the latest scientific evidence and medical standards.

What does Opencare do?

Founded in 2012, Opencare aims to streamline the process of finding a dentist who suits you perfectly.

They’re in numerous major metropolitan areas but are still growing and they don’t cover everywhere just yet. If you decide to give Opencare a try, you’ll soon discover whether your area is covered because you kick off exploring their service by providing your zip code.

Opencare is free to patients like you. They collect a service charge from the dental providers who partner with them.

Opencare’s network consists only of dentists who meet the company’s strict selection criteria. All of Opencare’s dentists:

  • Are within the top-rated 10% in terms of their ratings on Yelp, Google and RateMDs.
  • Are interviewed by Opencare at the dentists’ offices (and Opencare also meets with the staff).
  • Have never had any history of malpractice or fraud.

You can therefore trust, when you see the shortlist of recommended dentists, that these really are the cream of the local crop!

How does Opencare match me with dentists?

The gateway and main mechanism for using Opencare’s service is by taking their questionnaire. This information, together with your location, allows Opencare to examine its network of dentists and match you to the best ones for you in your area. Here’s how it works when you visit their website to use the service.

1. Enter your 'search address'.

This is a little oddly worded – they’re just looking for your city location. You can opt to “use my current location” by clicking a link, or you can just start typing your city or zip code. No need to get more specific at this point.

2. Answer the questionnaire.

You’ll be asked a series of multiple choice questions, which vary in specificity. The questions help Opencare understand your goals, your priorities and your insurance situation. More on the questionnaire below.

3. Optionally enter your email address and phone number.

You don’t have to do this, but by volunteering this information, you can get a $75 Visa gift card after your appointment.

4. See your matches and select a dentist to try.

Once you complete the questionnaire, it takes less than a minute for Opencare to show you your best local matches. The beauty of this is that they do a lot of legwork for you… If you’ve entered your insurance information (if you have dental insurance and specify you want to stay in-network), you’ll know that the list you see will be dentists in your network, all of whom met Opencare’s high standard for good online reviews and good impressions from Opencare’s on-site interviews and discussions with staff. In other words: you’re covered in more ways than one!

What to expect from the questionnaire

Since this is the central feature powering Opencare’s matching process, here are more details about the specific steps in the questionnaire, along with example answer choices. (It took our testers on average about five minutes to complete the questionnaire.)

Characterize your stance toward oral hygiene:

  • Committed
  • Neutral
  • Uninspired

Indicate why you’re seeking an appointment:

  • Checkup/routine cleaning
  • Specific treatment

Select the specific things you hope to achieve. If it’s a routine checkup, your choices include goals like:

  • Whiter teeth
  • Fresher breath
  • Cavity-free teeth
  • Cleaner mouth
  • Better smile
  • Healthier gums

If the goal is to address a specific treatment, here are your options for providing info about the need you feel:

  • Braces
  • Implants
  • Veneers
  • Bridges/Dentures
  • Nitrous Sedation

  • Crown/Cap
  • Root Canal
  • Wisdom Teeth
  • Filling
  • Tooth Extraction
  • Other

If you have an urgent need, you can select:

  • Pain
  • Damaged Tooth
  • Other

Next, select your most important factors in choosing a dentist:

  • Scheduling fit

  • Atmosphere
  • Location close by
  • Most experienced dentist

  • < 1 year

  • Weekends

Indicate how soon you’d like to see a dentist.

  • ASAP
  • Within 1 week
  • Within 2 weeks
  • More than 2 weeks from now

Opencare asks several questions about insurance coverage. First, do you have dental insurance?

  • Yes
  • No

Those with insurance are prompted to provide additional info. Do you prefer an in-network dentist?

  • Yes
  • Don’t care
  • Not sure

Are you the primary member on the insurance?

  • Yes
  • No

Identify dental insurance from a dropdown of 241 options, which include major providers like:

  • Aetna
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Cigna
  • Delta Dental
  • Guardian
  • LifeWise
  • Medicaid
  • MetLife
  • Premera Blue Cross
  • Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield

If you don’t have insurance, you’re asked about social assistance or if you’ll be paying out of pocket. NOTE: Opencare’s network doesn’t accept social assistance payment right now, so your only option would be to pay out of pocket at this time.

If insured through your employer, you can optionally provide the employer name and Opencare can use it to identify your insurance provider.

Lastly, you’ll be prompted to specify whether you want a male or female dentist, or if it doesn’t matter to you.

Opencare’s system processes all of this information, delivering your best matches very rapidly. Our testers found the process to be very easy and intuitive.

Reimbursement if dissatisfied

If you find that your dental appointment is unsatisfactory, after getting matched by Opencare, you can take advantage of another nice feature of Opencare’s service. In these cases, Opencare will actually cover up to $100 of your copay for the appointment that you disliked. That’s a little bit of extra incentive to give them a try. Our testers found the experience to be quite good, though (even the couple of them who hadn’t been to the dentist in a while…).

What criteria do we use to evaluate home health products and services?

We customize our evaluation criteria depending on the type and nature of the health-related, sometimes known as “telemedicine” service. For most online healthcare services, we have five areas that we use for our evaluations, including:

Quality: Are the doctors on the service licensed to practice in the US? Are the physicians board certified in the relevant practice areas? Do they have a high quality medical review board with oversight? Are their treatment options FDA approved?

Value: Are you getting your money’s worth? Are there any hidden costs or charges? Does the provider offer discounts or free services to our readers?

Customer Support: How well does the healthcare provider help you choose the best treatment? How clearly are the options presented? How well does the healthcare company help you understand options and get treatment if necessary?

Privacy: Are all treatments sent in discreet packaging? Will your data be stored securely? Could your data ever be shared without your permission?

Speed: How fast will you receive your treatment from the moment you click “buy?” Are doctors and medical professionals responsive to your questions and needs when you are messaging them? Are the waiting times stated by the telemedicine provider accurate and consistent?
