Auraglow Reviews

We rely on our teeth to do a lot for us. Not only are they responsible for chewing, biting, and tearing, ensuring we get all of the nutrients we need to survive, but our smiles help to define our social standing. Even though teeth naturally have an array of colors (not including pure white), 37 million Americans — 11% of the country’s population — used teeth whiteners in 2020. Studies have shown that adults judge people with missing teeth harshly, rating them as less attractive, intelligent, educated, trustworthy, and compassionate. While we know those judgments aren’t true, they paint a clear picture: what your teeth look like influences what others think of you.

Auraglow could help you restore your confidence by whitening your teeth. They sell every method of at-home teeth whitening, so no matter what your teeth look like, you can transform your smile into something you’re proud of. But how accurate are their promises of whitening your teeth seven shades in seven days?

In this review, we detail what Auraglow’s teeth whiteners can — and can’t — do for you.

What is Auraglow?

Auraglow is a self-described “oral wellness company” that creates and sells teeth whitening products. They carry every type of whitening setup, from strips to pens to rechargeable LED lights, so that you can find precisely the right fit for your time and coverage needs. All of their products are made in the United States, and they promise full transparency in their ingredient lists, which are easy to find on each product page.

This excellence aligns with their two stated rules: “Stains must go. Enamel must stay.” Centered around the goal of helping people find their most authentic smiles, Auraglow’s customer service is friendly and efficient while providing solid dental advice. However, customer service must be contacted through email or in-browser chat, which isn’t always staffed and doesn’t have a public-facing phone number.

How does teeth whitening work?

Much like there’s a wide range of natural eye colors, people have a wide range of natural tooth colors. The hard parts of a tooth are made of two layers: the enamel, or the white-to-translucent outer coating, and the dentin, which is a yellow core surrounding the soft tissue and nerves inside the tooth. Your enamel and dentin can vary in color depending on your age and genetics, which determine how thick your enamel is, what color your dentin and enamel are, how fast your teeth age, and more.

Despite our teeth having so many natural colors, intrinsic (in your control) and extrinsic (out of your control) factors can stain your teeth.

Intrinsic teeth staining

Chewed or smoked tobacco, food and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, berries, soy sauce, and tomato sauce), and medications (antihistamines, antipsychotics, antihypertensives, and some antibiotics)

Extrinsic teeth staining

Aging, genetics, trauma, excess fluoride exposure during childhood

Bleaching your teeth is the most common method of whitening them at home. It involves applying a solution made with peroxide to your teeth, penetrating layers of your tooth to break up large stains, and removing the compounds that can cause discoloration. Two peroxides are used in at-home teeth whitening: hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide is the more common bleaching agent in teeth whitening services, whether at a dentist’s office or in your bathroom. It’s identical to the household chemical at a lower strength (though we don’t recommend opening a bottle at home to bleach your teeth). Typically, higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and longer times spent on your teeth can lead to more damage. Still, hydrogen peroxide at any concentration can break up the stains that cause tooth discoloration.

On the other hand, carbamide peroxide is made of hydrogen peroxide and urea (a nitrogen-based compound found at the end of metabolic processes in all mammals, including people). It’s one-third as strong as hydrogen peroxide, so a 35% carbamide peroxide gel is equivalent to about 12% hydrogen peroxide. It’s gentler on your teeth and is less likely to cause sensitivities than hydrogen peroxide but may produce results a little more slowly.

At-home teeth whitening doesn’t work on most extrinsic stains, so if your teeth are yellowing due to age or are a little gray because of tetracycline use in your childhood, you’ll be better off asking your dentist for advice first.

35% carbamide peroxide study

Auraglow did their due diligence and then some with their whitening formulas. While carbamide peroxide is a well-accepted alternative to plain hydrogen peroxide for teeth whitening, the company created, ran, and analyzed a study to test the efficacy and safety of their whitening gel.

This study looked at 27 different people’s responses to using the gel for a week. They measured how much teeth shades changed, as well as:

  • Any discoloration or irritation in gums and other soft tissues
  • Gingivitis
  • Self-assessed teeth sensitivity on a scale of 0-10
  • Self-reported adverse reactions to the treatment

All labels and branding were removed from the implements to mitigate any preconceived biases.

After one week, the study found significant results. On average, teeth whitened about seven shades (with two participants whitening their teeth more than ten shades) without significant gum irritation or sensitivity. A few people had slightly bleached gums where the tooth met the gum, but that quickly disappeared after the study. (This probably happened because of some messy gel placement.) When interviewed, participants expressed:

  • No tooth pain (100%)
  • No gum irritation (100%)
  • Seeing noticeable or significant whitening (100%)
  • The product was convenient (96%)
  • The product exceeded their expectations (92%)

Of course, the company performed this study, so we have to take their results with a grain of salt. That said, these results are promising and prove that people of all ages experience actual results with Auraglow’s whitening products.

Auraglow’s catalog

Whitening kits

A vast majority of what Auraglow sells are whitening kits. We discuss the major types, costs, and features below.

Teeth Whitening Kit ($80)

This complete LED package is top of the line. LED teeth whitening products are the most effective since LED lights speed up the chemical reaction between peroxides and your enamel, removing stains faster and deeper. If you need serious whitening, this is your best option. This whitening kit contains a clear plastic tray equipped with a rechargeable LED light, charging cable, two 20mL tubes (20 treatments) of 35% carbamide peroxide whitening gel, a 30-minute timer, and a hard storage case.

Teeth Whitening Pen ($26)

Our favorite teeth whitening pen features a hard, metallic shell with a clicker button to effectively move gel from the pen into the brush bristles, allowing you to paint it all over your teeth or in specific locations. This pen is excellent for spot treatments, uneven discoloration, and fast applications since its 35% carbamide peroxide gel dries in 30 seconds (rather than 30+ minutes). Each box contains only one pen.

Teeth Whitening Strips ($40)

These stretchy teeth whitening strips grip your teeth to prevent slips and ensure that your teeth are evenly whitened. Each box contains 28 strips — 14 treatments with one strip for your upper teeth and one for your lower teeth — coated in a 6% hydrogen peroxide whitening agent. This is one of two products in Auraglow’s catalog that uses hydrogen rather than carbamide peroxide, and the whitening power is about half as strong. As a plus, the strip for your bottom teeth is rectangle-shaped (rather than arched strips), which helps them fit any mouth.

Custom Teeth Whitening Kit ($45)

Not sure if you want to commit to an entire LED system but know that you need more coverage than teeth whitening strips allow? Auraglow offers a custom teeth whitening kit with four trays you can mold to fit over your teeth perfectly. This provides dentist-quality whitening, getting into all the nooks and crannies between your teeth. Just soften the trays in warm water and mold them around your teeth. These four trays — two for your upper teeth, two for your lower teeth — come with one 20ml tube of 35% carbamide peroxide whitening gel for 20 treatments and a hard storage case to keep your trays safe.

Prefilled Whitening Trays ($45)

The grab-and-go equivalent of Auraglow’s Custom Teeth Whitening Kit, these whitening trays come filled with 11.2% hydrogen peroxide (about the same strength as their carbamide peroxide formula) sealed in a blister pack. They don’t mold around your teeth like the custom kit, but they’re faster and easier to use with equally strong results. One box of Prefilled Whitening Trays has seven disposable treatments (14 total trays) that you can wear as soon as you open the box.

Auraglow’s products should be worn for 30 minutes a day for best results, except for the Teeth Whitening Pen. The Teeth Whitening Pen can be applied and dried in 30 seconds, but know that you can’t eat, drink, or rinse your mouth within 30 minutes of application to keep the gel where it needs to be.

Refills and accessories

If you need a replacement part or another gel tube for more treatments, Auraglow’s got you covered. You won’t need to purchase an entirely new kit (unless you’re looking for another Teeth Whitening Pen). Auraglow offers:

  • Teeth Whitening Gel ($45)
  • Extra Strength Teeth Whitening Gel ($55)
  • LED Teeth Whitening Light ($30)

They also sell two goodies: a small navy blue toiletry bag ($28) and wintergreen-flavored toothpaste ($12 for a 4oz tube).

However, if you aren’t experiencing the whitening powers you were expecting, Auraglow expects you to continue trying their products for at least two weeks before they accept a return. That narrows your return window considerably, so start trying the product right away.

Is Auraglow a good value?

Even if you don’t find results as fast as Auraglow promises, we think their teeth whitening products still have an excellent value for people who want to clean and brighten their teeth with surface-level stains. They’re a perfect combination of convenient, gentle, and effective. Professional teeth whitening costs thousands of dollars and dozens of hours of your time, and it’s much more likely to make your teeth sore. Saving yourself that much money, time, and stress is always worth it.

Auraglow tends to be slightly more expensive than other at-home whitening kits, but not much. Their Teeth Whitening Pen, for example, is $26 to purchase once; other whitening pens of equal efficacy cost around $20. On the other hand, their Teeth Whitening Strips are $5 less expensive than the average price of Crest’s Professional Effects Teeth Whitening Strips. These strips are Crest’s strongest, advertised to lift your teeth eight levels in two weeks, comparable to Auraglow’s seven levels in seven days.

Given Auraglow’s track record of fast, gentle, and clinically proven results, a few more dollars to guarantee quality is a small price to pay. There’s a reason we consider their teeth whitening pen the best.

Getting started with Auraglow

There are two ways you can start your teeth whitening process with Auraglow. If you’ve done your research and know what you want, you can simply pick your product from the catalog and purchase it. But if you aren’t sure what is the best balance of time, money, and whitening power for your smile, Auraglow offers a Smile Quiz to help you decide.

The Smile Quiz is simple. You’ll first choose a color sample that closely matches the average color of your teeth.

Insider Tip: If your teeth aren’t colored evenly, select the shade that matches your darkest tone. Some teeth whitening methods, like whitening pens, allow you to spot-bleach certain areas while avoiding others.

The quiz then asks four questions:

  • Do you drink coffee, red wine, soda, or tea at least 1-2 times a week?
  • Do you smoke or chew tobacco?
  • How sensitive are your teeth?
  • How old are you?

With that bit of information, Auraglow recommends a product. Your quiz results specifically reference the answers that made Auraglow suggest that product. For example, it told one of our testers to use the Complete LED Whitening Kit because they have an off-white starting shade and regularly drink staining beverages. If you indicate that your teeth are any color other than white, Auraglow automatically recommends that you use their Complete LED Whitening Kit for the most intense whitening process. While theoretically correct, this focus on the whitest possible results makes this Smile Quiz less useful than other product matching quizzes.
