This test provides a quick assessment for those who are looking for more information about hormone levels following the menopausal transition. Menopause is the point at which someone has not had a period in 12 consecutive months and is unable to get pregnant. Menopause is also accompanied by many changes in the body as estrogen and progesterone levels drastically drop, including metabolism changes, bone loss, disruption in the body's ability to regulate temperature, decrease in sex drive, sleep disturbance, and difficulty with memory.

If you've gone through the menopausal transition and are now postmenopausal, it can be challenging to determine if symptoms you're experiencing are a continuation of menopausal symptoms or the result of some other cause. This test checks for estradiol and progesterone levels, two sex hormones whose levels decline with postmenopause and can play a role in the symptoms some women experience. If your levels of estradiol and/or progesterone are not within expected ranges, you can share your results with your healthcare provider to learn if they may recommend hormone therapy treatment or other options for managing symptoms.

This is not a menopause test to help determine whether you have entered menopause. Instead, this test is meant for postmenopausal women who are interested in exploring how key hormone levels have shifted after menopause (which can contribute to symptoms).

Note that menopause is typically diagnosed based on consideration of a number of factors like age and symptoms, and laboratory test results alone aren’t enough for a diagnosis of menopause.
